IN THIS EXCERCISE
Reframing the Narrative
Choose a scene from a well-known film that deals with social issues—racism, environmentalism, gender, or justice. Rewrite the scene from the perspective of a side character or an underrepresented voice that wasn’t fully explored. What changes when the focus shifts? How do power dynamics, emotions, or outcomes shift?
Why This Matters
This exercise builds empathy and narrative skills by forcing you to look at stories through new lenses. You’ll practice adapting scenes and expanding worlds to spotlight marginalized perspectives—essential skills for socially conscious filmmakers.
How Often?
Try this once a month with a different social issue or genre.
Want to Take It Further?
Film a short version of your reimagined scene or storyboard it. Compare it to the original—what new emotions or insights emerge?
